What gua sha facial lifting does for your skin

What Tension Looks Like When It Leaves Your Face

Your face collects tension all day. Clenching, screen time, poor sleep, and stress settle into your jaw, forehead, and cheekbones. That tension restricts circulation, traps fluid, and leaves your skin looking dull and puffy.

Gua sha facial lifting is a relaxing facial massage technique that uses smooth gua sha stones to gently glide across the skin in rhythmic strokes. The technique promotes circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and releases the tension sitting underneath your skin. You walk out looking visibly lifted and sculpted, with a healthy glow that lasts for days.

This is a clinical technique rooted in over 2,000 years of traditional Chinese medicine. At The Head Spa, your specialist performs it with the precision that only comes from understanding facial anatomy and knowing exactly where to work.

What you will notice after your session:

  • Reduced facial puffiness, especially along the jawline and under the eyes
  • More sculpted, defined facial contours
  • Improved circulation and a healthy, radiant glow
  • Released tension in the jaw, forehead, and temples
  • Better absorption of the skincare products applied during your treatment
  • An instantly refreshed, rejuvenated appearance

What to expect at your appointment

Here's How Your 30 Minutes Goes

Gua sha facial lifting is a $30 add-on to any head spa service. Your specialist performs it during your session, so there is no separate appointment needed.

The Technique
The Treatment

Your specialist applies a facial oil or serum first, then uses specialized gua sha stones with gentle, rhythmic strokes across your face, jawline, neck, and décolleté. The strokes stimulate circulation and reduce fluid retention. The pressure is deliberate but comfortable, and most clients find it deeply relaxing.

Zero Downtime
After Your Session

Irritation is minimal. You may notice mild pinkness from increased circulation, which fades quickly. You can apply makeup immediately after, and the treatment works beautifully same-day before events, photos, or a night out.

Better Together
Pair It Up

Pair it with a Signature Sapphire or Emerald session for the full experience. The Emerald already includes a face lifting massage, so adding gua sha extends and deepens that work with targeted lymphatic drainage.

Who it works best for

Made For Clenched Faces

Gua sha facial lifting is a good fit if you deal with any of these:

  • Morning puffiness that lingers into the afternoon
  • Jaw tension or tightness from clenching or grinding
  • Dull, congested skin that does not respond to products alone
  • Fine lines around the forehead and eyes
  • A desire for natural facial contouring without fillers or invasive procedures

It is also a strong choice if you want an instantly refreshed, lifted appearance with zero downtime. No recovery, no redness that sticks around, no restrictions on what you do after.

Your treatment starts with a scalp and skin screening, so your specialist will flag anything worth noting before beginning. If gua sha is not the right fit for your skin that day, we will recommend something better suited.

Why clients add gua sha to their head spa visit

The Jade Roller in Your Drawer Isn't Doing This

The at-home version of gua sha has taken over social media. Jade rollers and rose quartz tools are everywhere. They can feel nice, but the professional version is a different experience.

The Head Spa was founded by Sophia Serrano, MPAS, PA-C, and that clinical foundation shows in how we perform gua sha. We screen your skin under a microscope before we start, then adjust technique and pressure based on what we actually see.

Clients who add gua sha typically come back for it every visit. Once you feel the difference between a congested, tense face and a drained, lifted one, skipping it feels like leaving the job half done.

Frequently asked Questions

  • What is gua sha?

Gua sha is a massage technique from traditional Chinese medicine that uses smooth stone tools to glide across the skin in controlled strokes. On the face, it promotes circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and releases muscle tension. The technique has been practiced for over 2,000 years and is now used in clinical and spa settings worldwide.

  • Does gua sha help with jaw tension and clenching?

Yes. The strokes target the muscles along the jawline, temples, and forehead where clenching and grinding tension accumulates. If jaw tension is your primary concern, let your specialist know so they can focus extra time on that area.

  • How often should I get a gua sha facial?

Most clients add it to their monthly or twice-monthly head spa visits. That frequency builds on the circulation and drainage benefits over time.

  • Can I get a gua sha facial if I have sensitive skin?

In most cases, yes. Your specialist adjusts pressure based on how your skin responds, and the technique is designed to be gentle. Every session at The Head Spa begins with a Microscopic Scalp-Skin Screen, so we can assess your skin's condition before we start. If anything suggests gua sha is not the right fit that day, we will recommend an alternative.

  • Can I book a gua sha facial before an event?

Absolutely. There is no downtime, irritation is minimal, and you can apply makeup immediately after. You can have it done the same day as your event, even just a few hours before photos or a night out.
