How we were founded

Our Founder's Story

Sophia Michelle Serrano, MPAS, PA-C built The Head Spa from a deeply personal journey with hair loss—and decades of medical experience dedicated to understanding how the body heals, regenerates, and restores itself.

Her journey with scalp and hair health did not begin in a spa. It began when she was just 12 years old.

Why Scalp Health Became Personal

At 12, Sophia began experiencing severe symptoms of endometriosis. After years of symptoms and multiple hospitalizations, she was eventually diagnosed at 19 with disseminated endometriosis throughout her intra-abdominal cavity, including involvement of the renal system, discovered during an exploratory laparoscopy.

The treatment was extensive. One of the most significant interventions placed her into medically induced menopause at just 19 years old.

At that age, Sophia was also told that having children might be difficult and that, if she wanted to have children, she should consider doing so before the age of 25.

That experience profoundly influenced one of the most important decisions of her life: choosing a career as a Physician Associate rather than pursuing the traditional path to becoming a physician.

But there was something she wasn't told.

The long-term effects of such a dramatic hormonal shift—particularly on the scalp, hair follicle, skin, and overall tissue health—were not adequately explained to her. Preventative strategies for protecting those systems were not part of the conversation.

Going from some of the highest levels of estrogen in her young life to extremely low levels created a profound physiological change.

And her hair was one of the places she felt it.

When Hair Loss Became Personal

After years of living through the effects of hormonal disruption, Sophia experienced significant hair loss. Having her first child before the age of 25 further intensified the changes.

What she saw in the mirror wasn't simply a cosmetic concern.

It affected her confidence, her identity, and how she felt about herself.

And because Sophia had spent her career studying medicine, healing, and tissue regeneration, she couldn't simply accept that hair loss was something she had to live with.

She began asking a different question:

What is happening to the environment that is supposed to support every strand of hair?

A Career Built Around Regeneration and Healing

Long before The Head Spa existed, Sophia's professional focus had been centered around cellular regeneration, skin health, vascular health, and wound healing.

Her clinical experience included working alongside leading specialists in areas such as vascular surgery, plastic surgery, wound care, skin grafting, and arterial and venous disease.

She became deeply involved in the science of how the body repairs and regenerates tissue.

Her work even included participation in early research involving the use of stem cells for human neovascularization—the development of new blood-vessel growth—within the United States.

This foundation would later become critical to how she approached hair and scalp health.

Turning Medical Research Toward Hair

Sophia had already worked extensively with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in areas including wound care and urinary rejuvenation.

As research began exploring the potential applications of regenerative medicine and PRP for skin rejuvenation and hair loss, she began investigating the possibilities for the scalp.

She reviewed research, white papers, clinical studies, and emerging applications with research-development teams.

But she didn't stop at reading the research.

She began looking at her own experience through the same evidence-based lens she had used throughout her medical career.

And she discovered something important:

There was rarely one single answer.

Hair loss can have many contributing factors—hormonal changes, genetics, aging, medical conditions, medications, nutritional factors, stress, chemotherapy, metabolic changes, and more.

The more she studied, the more she recognized that understanding the individual causes mattered.

From Academic Medicine to a New Mission

Evidence-based medicine became a major part of Sophia's career.

She was appointed as an instructor for Evidence-Based Practice at UT Southwestern, where she taught medical professionals how to evaluate research and make clinical decisions based on evidence.

She also pursued additional education at Oxford focused on teaching and applying research-backed medical decision-making.

This wasn't simply academic work for Sophia.

It shaped the way she thought.

Ask the right question. Examine the evidence. Understand the cause. Don't simply treat the symptom.

Eventually, Sophia made the difficult decision to leave academic medicine.

She wanted to take everything she had learned about research, regeneration, and clinical decision-making and apply it to a problem that had become deeply personal: helping people experiencing hair loss and scalp problems.

What Years of Research Revealed

Over decades of studying hair loss across a wide range of circumstances—from hormonal changes and medical conditions to chemotherapy, mental-health-related stressors, medications, aging, and the rapidly expanding use of GLP-1 medications—Sophia kept seeing the same gap.

The conversation often focused on the hair follicle.

But what about the environment surrounding it?

The scalp is living tissue.

It has circulation, skin cells, glands, microbiology, hydration, nutrients, inflammation, and an environment that directly surrounds every emerging strand.

Sophia became convinced that the scalp ecosystem deserved far more attention than it traditionally receives.

The Missing Piece: The Scalp Ecosystem

Sophia's own experience with medically induced menopause gave her a firsthand understanding of what dramatic hormonal changes could do to the body.

Her research and clinical experience led her to explore another critical component of hair health:

the environment in which the follicle has to function.

Build-up on the scalp, inadequate hydration, changes in the scalp barrier, inflammation, and insufficient nutritional support can all affect the environment surrounding the hair follicle.

The more Sophia studied, the more she believed that improving hair health required looking beyond the strand itself.

You can't optimize the hair without considering the scalp.

Why The Head Spa Exists

The Head Spa was created to bring this philosophy to life.

Sophia's mission is to help people understand why their hair and scalp may be changing—not simply sell them another product or promise another quick fix.

Her goal is to identify the factors affecting the scalp and hair, create individualized strategies, and provide consistent care that supports the health of both the scalp and the strand.

The Head Spa combines Sophia's medical background, her passion for regenerative science, and her personal experience with hair loss into an approach centered around education, evidence, personalization, and scalp health.

Building the Next Generation of Scalp Specialists

Sophia's vision extends beyond treating individual guests.

She wants to change the way the world thinks about scalp care.

That means developing and training Hairologists to the highest possible standard, creating protocols grounded in research and clinical understanding, and continually seeking better solutions for scalp and strand health.

The goal isn't simply to create beautiful hair.

It is to create a deeper understanding of the biological environment that supports it.

Why Hair Matters More Than We Realize

For most people, hair is one of the most visible elements of their appearance.

When hair changes, confidence can change with it.

Hair loss can affect how someone feels when they look in the mirror, how they present themselves to the world, and sometimes how willing they are to participate in life.

Sophia understands this personally.

But she also believes there is something even bigger happening.

The factors that influence hair health—hormones, nutrition, circulation, inflammation, stress, medications, metabolic changes, aging, and overall wellness—are often connected to the health of the person as a whole.

Hair can be a window into what is happening beneath the surface.

Improving the health of the scalp and hair may not solve every underlying health concern, but it can become an important part of helping people understand their bodies, regain confidence, and take a more proactive approach to their overall well-being.

Sophia's Promise

Sophia doesn't believe people should have to accept hair loss without understanding what may be contributing to it.

She doesn't believe there should be a one-size-fits-all solution. And she doesn't believe beautiful hair should come at the expense of healthy hair.

Her mission is simple:

Find the cause. Understand the scalp. Support the biology. Protect the strand.

And above all, give people the knowledge, care, and individualized solutions they deserve.

Start Your Own Scalp Care Story

The Head Spa began because Sophia experienced what it feels like to lose something that deeply affects how you see yourself.

Her journey took her from a young woman navigating severe endometriosis and medically induced menopause, to a clinician and educator studying regeneration and evidence-based medicine, and ultimately to a founder determined to change the way we approach scalp and hair health.

She built The Head Spa because she needed answers once, too.

Now, she wants to help others find theirs.
